We Take Sustainability Seriously

At Snakes & Ladders, we are on a journey to become more sustainable and gradually making changes that take us towards that goal. For example, our building at Syon Park is powered by solar energy, and a large proportion of our lighting is now LED. Other small changes include recycling our disposable cups, and offering a discount on our hot beverages to customers bringing a reusable cup. Some of the steps that we have taken have a bigger impact than others, but they all count.

Our Carbon Footprint

  • We have timers on our customer drink chiller to ensure they are turned off overnight yet nice and chilled in time for our customers
  • We only turn on required equipment in the café in quiet periods e.g. one microwave not two, two coffee machines rather than four
  • We turn off the cooking equipment in our kitchen when not in use to save electricity
  • Our supplier Brakes won the Footprint Award for Environmentally Efficient Logistics in 2023
  • We attended a series or webinars with SME Climate Hub using Climate Essentials carbon management platform to learn and understand our business impact and what we can do as a business to create positive actions.
  • We have been working with Planet A (https://www.planet-a.co/) to create a reduction plan looking at additional focuses we can implement to further lower our carbon emissions as a business
  • We turn off the cooking equipment in our kitchen when not in use to save electricity

Our Energy

  • We have replaced a large number of our buildings lights to LED and we plan to carry on until all lights are LED.
  • We have changed some of the mechanisms our lighting operates by to save usage this includes sensors & timers
  • We are in the process of adding additional solar panels to our roof in Brentford
  • We have external lights with UV sensors so they won’t turn on when its sunny

Sustainable Materials Used

  • We sell Pokito cups and Snakes and Ladders plastic water bottles to promote re-use
  • We have replaced all single use plastic food packaging with plant based compostable alternatives (Vegware)
  • When replacing equipment we look to find more energy efficient options as a replacement
  • We launder our cleaning cloths giving them a longer life
  • We carry out mixed recycling of the following products:
      • Paper, card and cardboard
      • Steel and aluminum cans
      • Mixed plastics items:
        • Clean plastic films
        • 1: PET / PETE or RPET – Polyethylene, Terephthalate
        • 2: HDPE – High Density Polyethylene
        • 5: PP – Polypropylene APET, Tinplate, Paper Laminate, OPP Oriented Polypropylene, Carton Board Laminate

Our Waste

  • We have a recycling bin for all cardboard waste.
  • We have increased the amount we recycle, greatly reducing the amount we send to general waste.
  • Our paper plates, cups, slush cups, tea stirrers and straws are all compostable.
  • When possible staff take home coffee grounds to use on their home grown vegetables or to put into their garden compost bins.
  • Our bins are labelled to encourage customers to recycle their items.
  • We often turn off ‘auto receipt’ to reduce the amount of paper used.
